Tekahu Challenge!

Tekahu Challenge!
In Class we have been assigned some challenges to complete over the week. We need to complete a minimum of 2 challenges per day.
Here is one of my completed challenges for the day:

Friday 24 April 2020

Anzac Day.

Each Year On April 25th we celebrate Anzac Day.
Anzac stands for "Australia and New Zealand Army Corps".
On Anzac day we celebrate and remember the ones that went to war to fight for our country. A symbol of Anzac day is commonly known as a poppy.
In Class we had to make our own poppy to wear on Anzac day.
Here is mine:
I am proud of my poppy and I am proud to wear it!

The Maori Battalion Story...

In class we have been assigned to summarise a text called "The Maori Pioneer Battalion".
This text was all about war and the impact on the soldiers in it.
I learnt that the soldiers did a lot more than just fight in one spot, they also went around to different locations and defended them.

Here is my summarised story:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Maori Pioneer Battalion

War was Declared on the 4th of August, 1914.
The Government decided to send 8000 men to war but within 4 days, thousands and thousands of men had signed up.
The main group of soldiers was called the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Very Few Maori had Birth Certificates at the time which made it easy for Maori Boys to lie about their ages. In no time, places like the East Coast and Rotorua had more than enough volunteers.

In July 1915, The soldiers were sent to Gallipoli.
At first, the Maori started off their war by digging trenches and building supply depots.
The Maori men joined the war to fight, and because of heavy casualties of the NZ Soldiers, the Maori got their chance.
On the 6th of August, the Maori soldiers were ordered to go infiltrate the Turkish trenches along the foothills of Chunuk Bair.
Before they started their Trek a Chaplain said a prayer: “Remember you have the mana, the honour, and the good name of the Maori people in your keeping this night.
That night the haka “Ka Mate Ka Mate” would be heard from the hills as the Maori contingent captured enemy trenches, one by one.

The Maori Contingent became known as “Te Hokowhitu-A-Tu.
In 1915, the soldiers were farewelled. Their Whanau said:
“Farewell, Young Men. Go and uphold the name of our warrior ancestors. Fear God. And honour the King”.
The group of 500 men sailed to Egypt. From there, they were taken to Malta where they would guard the Island for a few weeks.

Some people thought that the war would be a quick and easy victory but it was quite the opposite.
Because of the high death toll, not many more men were signing up so governments quickly found a problem.
By 1918 over 100 Waikato Maori had been sent to prison for evading military training. In the long run, only a handful of Waikato Maori ever got into uniform.

Seventeen Maori died on the slopes of Chunuk Bair, countless more were injured.
After the battle Maori soldiers became known as brave fighters.
Te Hokowhitu-A-Tu was slowly reduced to almost nothing.
By the time the Contingent left, only 134 Maori soldiers remained out of the 500 that fought alongside them.

After Gallipoli, soldiers from Te Hokowhitu-A-Tu joined with the soldiers at the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment.
Those two groups could now be known as the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion.
These men arrived in France in April, 1916.
Their war started off as digging trenches and building roads behind the front line.
These tasks were still an endangerment to their lives as they were constantly under gun fire. This Feat made it extremely hard to get things done.

A few months later, these men became involved in the battle of the Somme, and much later, Messines, where more Maori died in action.
Around the middle of 1917, the Pioneer Battalion was reformed.
The Otago men were replaced with around 470 soldiers, most of these men coming from Nuie and the Cook Islands.
This newly forged battalion became known as the New Zealand (Maori) Pioneer Battalion.

On the day of the Wars end, the troops were on their way to Germany.
Suddenly, high command changed its orders.
The soldiers were sent back to New Zealand.
The Maori Pioneer Battalion were the only people that would return to NZ. As a group, the Maori soldiers were given a huge welcome back.
The soldiers knew that they had done their part in the war and done it well…

Shapes Around The House!

Shapes Around The House

In Class we have been assigned to find 10 shapes that are around our houses.
I Have Presented mine with a slideshow:

This Task was Hard because I struggled to find shapes that were unique or different.

SHAPES!

Shapes

In class we had an assignment to complete the questions on a google slide about shapes.
Some of them were challenging because it was sort of hard to fugure out how many lines of Symmetry there was in that specific shape.
In this task we learned about Vertices, Edges, and Faces.

Vertices are the point in a 3D Shape where the corners -

meet.

Edges are the parts of a 3D shape where the faces/sides ---
meet.

Faces are the side of a 3D shape .--------------------------------- ----------------------------------

Pigeon Impossible!🐦

Pigeon Impossible

In Class we have been assigned to do a task called "Pidgeon Impossible".
We had to watch a short animation about a Pidgeon that has ruined the plans of a secret agent and then we had to come up with a new scenario for the pidgeon to ruin.
Here is a link to the original Video:Pigeon Impossible

My Scenario was....
A lab full of scientists were working on a formula to bring people back from the dead when all of a sudden, a rogue pigeon crashed through the window of the lab, knocking over all of the extremely harmful liquids. One of which just so happened to be "The Anti-Death Serum". It seeped into the cracks in the pearl white quartz flooring. The room began to shake and the walls slowly started to dissapear into the earth, almost as if the ground was swallowing them. The Growls of the zombies echoed throughout the city as the pigeon kept flying around like nothing ever happened. The zombies came closer and closer to the lab until finally, the living dead overtook the entire laboratory. In the blink of an eye, all of the scientists had been turned into zombies.
All but one....
A man named Clarke had secretly been developing a counterpart to "The Anti-Death Serum",
an antidote.
He knew that one day it would come in handy.
He grabbed the vile of liquid and sprinted toward the zombie infested lab. Unfortunately, there was only enough of the antidote to cure 5 people. A total of 37 Specimens were infected. After injecting the antidote into the 5 scientists, he felt a sharp pain, and that pain was guilt. 32 Scientist's were still "zombiefied". It suddenly clicked. The lightbulb inside of Clarkes head just grew brighter as he remembered, the main ingredient in the antidote is potassium, the same ingredient inside of bananas! He quickly grabbed the 5 scientists and ran towards the supermarket at the other side of town. This side of town was completely oblivious to what was going on so no panic had ensued. They quickly grabbed all of the bananas. Without counting those bananas, he was completely oblivious to the fact that he had only 31 bananas. He needed 32...

They ran back to the other side of town to feed the zombies the bananas. They had finished handing out all of the bananas when they realised that they were 1 short. He looked through the window of a nearby home when he saw a man, about to sink his teeth into the last banana in that city. He bolted towards the house like his life depended on it. He managed to snag the banana just before the man had a chance to bite it. He fed it to the last zombie and saved the world.....

Biography!- Sir David Attemborough

Biography

In class we have been assigned a task to create a Biography about someone who had/has a positive effect on our environment. I chose Sir David Attemborough because he is looking at Climate Change and the potential solutions to the earths problems.

David Attenborough

David Frederick Attemborough was born on May 8th, 1926 in Isleworth Middlesex, England. He grew up with his 2 brothers, Richard and John. As the son of a University college principal, David was brought up in an environment where learning was highly encouraged and he spent his childhood collecting fossils, stones and other natural specimens.
In 1936 David and his brother Richard went to a lecture that was presented by a well known advocate for conservation. David was amazed by the passion, determination, and knowledge for the subject that the speaker showed, and that one event kick-started an incredible career, creating one of the worlds best known eco warriors and most vocal supporters of saving planet earth.

After graduating high school, David was awarded with a scholarship at Cambridge University to study natural sciences. Here he further pursued his love for the environment and his passion for the earth.
After completing his studies in 1947, David was called to serve in the Royal Navy for 2 years.
In 1949, David returned to London where he would soon find a job as an editor for an educational publisher. That following year he began a training programme for BBC which led to an incredible career spanning decades, both behind and in front of the camera, and making him one of the most powerful, knowledgeable and well loved naturalists the world has ever seen.

His passion for the environment, his research regarding every living thing, the effects of climate change and his commitment to saving the environment lead to an incredible number of honours and awards including a knighthood in 1985, an Order of Merit in 2002 and over 31 honorary degrees from various universities worldwide.

Sir David is also the most traveled person in history, and the oldest person to visit the North Pole.  As the biggest tribute to his great achievements, several species of plants, insects, birds and animals have been named in his honour which will continue to honour his name long after he is gone.
